Does it seem science fiction and fantasy are more popular than they've ever been, why?

I think its to do with the culture we're at now. The 'nerd' market is huge, look at WoW for instance, now, don't get me wrong but a extroverted individual isn't going to find a need to escape the world they are in, because right now what they have in 'material possessions' is everything to them. So books that deals with fantasy and science fiction will increase due to the demand of escapism.Does it seem science fiction and fantasy are more popular than they've ever been, why?
I would say Twilight, but I honestly don't think that was the beginning. It certainly added to it, but it wasn't the catalyst. I don't think everybody suddenly picked up fantasy books because a new one came out.

From personal experience, I'd say that people got bored of reading normal books about normal lives. Fantasy/sci-fi tend to intrigue you and enrapture you in a completely different world, which is something a lot of people enjoy. Other worlds are usually much nicer than this one.

I also remember that after reading Harry Potter, I abandoned the Pony Pals because I found them less interesting after reading fantasy.Does it seem science fiction and fantasy are more popular than they've ever been, why?
Well, many have gotten into Paranormal Romance. Now, personally I think this all had to do with the series Twilight. Jacob: A werewolf in love with a human girl. Edward: A vampire in love with a human girl. And many authors may have seen how popular werewolves and vampires got, and made their own stories up about them. I guess that may be part of it.Does it seem science fiction and fantasy are more popular than they've ever been, why?
2 things: Harry Potter and Twilight.

I remember when I was a teenager, and it was "uncool" to read fantasy. %26gt;.%26gt;;;

Now, due to their tremendous success, everyone else is jumping on that band wagon.
