Why were science fiction films popular in the 1950s?

Because of the Atomic and Hydrogen bombs.

Few remember, but "Godzilla" (Gojira) "The Day the Earth Stood Still," "Them!" (giant ants) and all of those giant creatures (including men and women) and 'friendly alien' movies had the same message: atomic weapons will kill us all by unleashing a) giant monsters, b) aliens giving us dire warnings, or c) Republicans, like Joe McCarthy. Why were science fiction films popular in the 1950s?
The explosion of scientific advances due to WWII,

embodied by, but not limited to, atomic bombs,

space exploration, TV, and computers.

Science was expanding at a rate never before seen. Why were science fiction films popular in the 1950s?
Probably the same reason they are today. People like futuristic ideas.
