No offense to anyone on Answers, but you're not going to find any science authors here. You're hard pressed to find any real novelist, though one or two do post here. Your best bet is to pick up a few science text books and see how those authors cite. I used do volunteer work for a school for the blind where we translated text to digital and part of that work was marking the textbooks, and usually the citations were how the other poster mentioned.I am asking authors of Popular-science books: did you make in-text citation or you made only the bibliography?
I'm afraid I've never authored a popular science book but I've read plenty and know a little about systems of academic citation. Very popular is just a number in the text leading to notes either at the end of each chapter or at the end of the book with a separate bibliography.
