An excelent and entertaining book is 'A Short History of Nearly Everything' by Bill Bryson.
He covers a great number of interesting points, events, and concepts from the history of science from just about every field of science, and the book is aimed at a general audience. It is great to read, and very accessible!
I really loved the 'Horrible Science' books when I was a kid. They are designed for children and teens but they still contain a lot facts and interesting information.
Maybe you are too old to want to read kids books but I'm not sure that there is anything similar for adults. What are the most interesting and accessible popular science books for someone who knows nothing about science?
I loved this book when I was a kid. Heck, I think I might buy it right now.
"How Things Work" by David Macaulay and Neil Ardley

Well, I wouldn't say it's technically a science book--more of a book about how mechanical stuff works with very interesting drawings. What are the most interesting and accessible popular science books for someone who knows nothing about science?
It might be over your head, but try reading Stephen Hawking - A Brief History of Science.
It's very readable. I can't think of a book that inspires more scientific awe. Go to a Barnes and Noble and read the first couple chapters. You won't be disappointed.
Visit your local library, ask and browse till you find something that really grabs your interest.
