What are some of the most popular science books published before 1840?

Preferably works that would have influenced scientists of the early 1800s.What are some of the most popular science books published before 1840?
A couple Darwin was certainly familiar with at the time of his voyage on the Beagle were Lyell's 'Principles of Geology' and at some of Alexander von Humboldt's writing on his exploits is South America. Lyell's thinking flowed into Darwin's later evolutionary theory, and Humboldt was interested in just about everything including geology, volcanics, botany, zoology, meterology, ocean currents, ethnography...

As Humboldt also published books aimed at non-specialist readers, and these were translated into many languages, he was probably the best selling science author in the first half of the 1800s. As it happens, I've just finished reading an edition of his 'Reise nach S眉damerika'.

Update
%26lt;%26lt;Hypothetical bonus points if you can name some works about linguistics, prehistory, or the Mayans...though obviously those would be more in the social sciences.%26gt;%26gt;

Humboldt discusses elements of linguistics and South American prehistory in his 'Reise nach S眉damerika'! It's more about Incas and Aztecs than Mayans. For example, he talks about the interrelationships of the various native languages in northern South America going down to Peru, and refers to their being as closely related as German (his first language) and Persian; ie. clearly belong to the same linguistic group.
