Why is science fiction such a popular genre?

Because of the nerds. :P Nah, it's just a very imaginative genre, people like to imagine how the world would be if we lived among strange creatures, and you can go far with the characters, setting etc. Especially if it is in the future, people like to imagine what it would be like. Stars Wars also made the genre very popular, and effects in Science Fiction are often stunning.Why is science fiction such a popular genre?
I think it's popular because it's a way to project/predict the future. Sometimes it involves the way society may progress if certain measures aren't taken, such as in the novel 1984, or Brave New World. It also is often the way for inventors to get ideas....the communicators used in the original Star Trek series are an awful lot like our current cell phones....
