Not strictly hard science, but try Blood Work by Holly Tucker. It's about early experiments with blood transfusions, and the forces that conspired to discredit it.
It's very well written.

Not a genre I read a whole lot of, I'm afraid. I do want to read Quantum Man by Lawrence Krauss, though - being a big fan of Richard Feynman.
