Was iron man popular in comics before the movie came out?

In most of the comic book battles like with Thor hulk spiderman and even captain America iron man lost. But after the movie he is so popular.with all his science he couldn't defeat any other hero.if it has ever happened please mention. Was iron man popular in comics before the movie came out?
DC has Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman as their top characters.

Marvel has Captain American, Thor and Iron Man.

While not all of them may be A-List outside of comics, to fans, they're the best. Iron Man has been one of Marvel's most bankable characters since his initial appearance. The movie catapulted him into mainstream. But there's a reason he was Marvel's first choice when building their film studio.

Thor is a God, can't be beat. Hulk might as well be a God, can't be beat. He's beaten Spider-Man more than once, and can kick the crap out of Captain America. (Unless Cap is having a good day. Depends on the writer)
I don't know. When I first heard of Ironman I thought it was a jokeWas iron man popular in comics before the movie came out?
iron man has always been pretty epic he was leader of the avengers a few times he temporarily subdued the hulk once or twice he never really won but nobody can really beat the hulk he had his own animated series for awhile so id say he was popular before the movieWas iron man popular in comics before the movie came out?
Your talking about the character that found and revived the frozen comatose Captain America, founded the avengers, and later defeated Captain America ending the civil war...ya know what. It's easier just to give you this link.

Iron man wasn't really an A-list character before the movies, but he was very important to the Marvel universe as the guy who basically singlehandedly funded the Avengers for a long time. He's had several of his own series that enjoyed moderate success, but nothing really on the level of Spiderman or the X-men. I would say most of his popularity came from his role as a member (or enemy) of the Avengers, not from his own spotlights.
